Make the most of your generosity when donating to Saltbox House.  Contribute appreciated property such as stock securities or shares in mutual funds.  If you have owned the property for more than a year, you can deduct the fair market value (average between the highest and lowest selling price on the date of the gift).  No one pays tax on the gain on sale / appreciation of the security.  (We do not recommend donating securities that have dropped in value.  It is better to sell them, recognize the loss and get the tax deduction, then donate proceeds if you so desire.)

Another tax advantaged method of being generous is to give direct charitable gifts from your IRA to Saltbox House or other charitable organizations.  If you are 70 1/2 you can give gifts in this way of up to $100,000 per year.  You recognize no income on these gifts.  (Now Required Minimum Distributions are not required until age 72, but direct charitable transfers can still begin at 70 1/2.)
